DIY All Natural Sunscreen

I'm excited to have the lovely Johanna back on the blog today, sharing a great All Natural Sunscreen Recipe with you all. So without further ado take it away Johanna.

Hi, I’m Johanna, and I blog over at Our Joyful Home. I am super thrilled to be back at Little Lady Little City! You can check out my blog for DIY projects, recipes, PNW adventures, and the occasional style post.
DIY All Natural Sunscreen - littleladylittlecity.com
If you’ve ever been to the Seattle area in the summer. you know two things: 1: Western Washington summers are literally a slice of heaven, and 2: We’re all astoundingly pale. We get so little sun 9 months out of the year that by the time shorts weather rolls around, if we spend more than 10 minutes in the sun we fry.

I’ve always been fairly sun-conscious, but a few years ago when we had our twin girls I reached a whole new level. We didn’t even go grocery shopping without slathering sunscreen all over our precious babes’ sensitive, lily white skin. But then I started reading about commercial sun screen, and all the crap that is in it. Did you know your sunscreen could actually be really harmful? In fact, if you buy commercial sunscreen, odds are that it is. So I was on a hunt for a better solution, and this winter when I started using essential oils, I found one.
DIY All Natural Sunscreen - littleladylittlecity.com
Carrot seed oil packs quite a natural SPF punch! In fact, according to an article published in “Pharmacognosy Magazine” in 2009, it carries an SPF of approximately 30-34. That’s crazy! Using coconut oil as the base, which has an estimated SPF of 4-6, you’ve got yourself some excellent coverage.

The studies on natural substances and sun protection are pretty preliminary, and the SPF are just estimates, so when we started out with this I was pretty cautious. It’s not waterproof, so we reapply often if we’re in and out of the water, or sweating a lot. But the whole family has been using it for months and we haven’t gotten even a little bit pink, which I consider a resounding success!

DIY Sunscreen

2 cups unrefined coconut oil
25 drops carrot seed essential oil
10 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix all ingredients into the bowl of a stand mixture with a whisk attachment, and whip until completely combined. Store in a glass or metal container below 70 degrees (coconut oil will melt if it gets above 70 F, which won’t effect the SPF but will be harder to apply).

Summer Sun and Thrifted Shirts

Summer Sun and Thrifted Shirts - littleladylittlecity.com
I got this shirt over the weekend and I am pretty sure it was meant to be. As I mentioned before things were pretty crappy for me last week, and I've been trying to take my coffee mug's advice to not let stuff get me down. So when I came across this shirt at Goodwill I knew I had to own it. I have been rocking it all weekend, and It's definitely made me smile, which is a plus. Also, please excuse my hair, not only I am in desperate need of some root work but also a hair cut. I've totally been procrastinating on taming my roots just because it takes soooo long.

Because last week was just so bleh Will and I made sure to take this weekend off and just enjoy ourselves. Saturday we slept in for the first time in a very long time, did some errands around the house, then met up with the family to hangout and have dinner. We went to one of my favorite restaurants, Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles, and basically ate more food than one should ever eat in one sitting, haha. They seriously have the best waffles I have ever eaten! Then, yesterday we went and saw Jurassic World with my dad. I thought the movie was fun (nothing great, but fun), however, Will did not like it's stupidity in the slightest. Hopefully the next movie we get to he will enjoy. After the movie we just were pretty lazy and hung out at home, the best way to end a weekend, in my opinion.

This week is jam packed with work for both of us, a lot of boring stuff on my plate, unfortunately, but hopefully I can make a pretty big dent in all of it. So it looks like we will be cooped up all week, which I guess is ok since it's suppose to be 110+ degrees the entire time, ughs. I've been away from Phoenix summers for so long that I'm not use to them anymore. Or at least less use to them, because honestly I'm not sure if you ever get use to these hot days and nights. What are you all up to this week?

This week was all sorts of crazy and yesterday was a pretty crappy day so I'm pretty darn happy it's the weekend. I ready to just kind of check out for the next couple of days. I have a feeling tonight is going to consist of some pizza for dinner and an adult beverage or two. I think we are also going to finally go see Jurassic World this weekend, so I'll be treating myself a big old tub of popcorn. Like most people my age I'm pretty excited for the movie. I saw the first one with my dad on a day off from school and I remember my mom being so mad because it was PG-13 and she thought it would be too scary for me. But, of course, I loved it! What are you all up to this weekend?

Our Two Toned Scamp

Our Two Toned Scamp - Scamp Remodel - littleladylittlecity.com
I just couldn't wait any longer to share just how good our Scamp Bessy looks after her new paint job! She still needs a little more work to be completely done on the outside, but she's seriously come a long way. We spent a total of about five days over the course of two week getting her all prepped and painted. It was crazy hot and a lot of hard work (I think the last two days we worked on her it was well above 100 degrees), so I'm pretty sure we both sweated out at least 1/2 our body weight each day, haha.

When we decided to give her a new paint job we thought it would be really great to do a two tone look keep with her vintage vibe. I mean, she is 40 years old. We thought yellow and white would look great, and truth be told I think it came out even better than we expected! It looks especially snazzy with black windows and lining around the door, which we will continue around the bottom edge. We are also going to get a new Scamp logo printed out in white for the side.

I'm so excited with how the painting came out, because honestly we really weren't sure how it would look having never done it before. We did lots of research trying to figure what the best path would be, and we settled on getting a paint gun to spray on the paint. After a small learning curve the painting job went smoothly. Now that the outside is mostly done we will hopefully have time to continue working on the inside. Honestly, it still needs a lot of work. If all we get to are the floors I would such a happy camper as I think think it would do a ton to make it feel nicer on the inside. We still have to figure out what to do about the wall lining which was marred by dark carpet strips that covered grooves in the tough white foam lining. At the moment everything inside is in great disrepair, but hopefully some caulking and a fresh coat of paint will help.

We cannot wait to get back out on the road with her and get moving to some much cooler weather!

Why I Switched to Asian Beauty Skin Care Products

I have fairly sensitive skin that tends to get painfully dry even with the most delicate of cleansers. Over the years I have dropped some serious dough on all the newest and latest facial cleansers for sensitive skin with no real luck. In fact, for the longest time, I'm ashamed to admit that I thought a tightness and dry feeling meant that my face was now clean. My skin was literally squeaky clean. So after getting my face to this horrific level of dryness I would then slather my face with moisturizer only to have it feel dry after another hour or so. I was unhappy, my poor skin was very unhappy, and it was evident in my splotchy complexion and breakouts. The cycle lead me to buy more and more make up to try to cover up all my skins unhappiness.

Enter: my friend Kayla, who started talking about her journey into the world of Asian Beauty products. I was really intrigued. After talking to her and doing my own researched I decided to try out some Asian Beauty skin care products for myself. I placed my order and I'm happy to report I have never looked back!
Why I Switched to Asian Beauty Skin Care Products - littleladylittlecity.com
My first order was for daily cleansers, and after the first wash my skin felt so much better! Gone were the days of that tight and squeaky clean, now my skin just feels clean. My complexion has a much more even tone, is so much more healthy feeling, and I kind of love doing my routine everyday!
Why I Switched to Asian Beauty Skin Care Products - littleladylittlecity.com
The Kose Cosmeport Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil - An oil cleanser like this is the first step of double cleanse process. The oil helps breakup any make up and/or sunscreen that you have on your face. This stuff evens works wonders on eye makeup, just be prepared to look like you had either sweated or cried mascara all down your face, haha.
Why I Switched to Asian Beauty Skin Care Products - littleladylittlecity.com
Rohto Hadalabo Gokujyn Hyaluronic Acid Cleansing Foam - A foam cleanser like this is the final step in the double cleanse process. The foam helps to wash away all of that makeup or sunscreen that the oil cleanser helped break up on your face. My skin is so clean and happy feeling after using this stuff, no more dry and tight feeling for me.
Why I Switched to Asian Beauty Skin Care Products - littleladylittlecity.com
Rohto Hadalabo Gokujun Hyaluronic Lotion Moist - Now, don't let the "lotion" part of the name fool you, it's actually a toner that comes after the foam cleanser.  This stuff is super hydrating and makes my skin feel so wonderfully smooth. Even though it helps hydrate you will still want to use a moisturizer as well.

If you are interested in learning more about Asian Beauty products check out r/AsianBeauty over on Reddit, it seriously is one of the most extensive and wonderful resources I have come across. I would suggest checking out the Beginners Guide, it does a great job of explaining all about philosophy and the basic steps. One thing to remember is that just like any other skin care routine really it's all about trial and error.

Have you guys tried any Asian Beauty products, if so what are some of your favorites?

T-shirts and Summer Days

T-shirts and Summer Days - littleladylittlecity.com
Oh lordy guys, it is getting hot here in Phoenix. I'm talking 100+ days now. Usually we are back on the mountain by this time, but we got a couple big jobs that are keeping us put for a little while longer, which has it's ups and downs. Ups: getting to spend more time with family and friends, swimming, and getting to spend more time in our house. Downs: it's hot and this means less time on the mountain.

I've been living in Target t-shirts for the past couple of weeks because not only are the freaking adorable, but they are so wonderfully light and soft! Now all I need is a nice pair of shorts. Somehow I ended up leaving all my shorts on the mountain like a dummy. Oh well, I guess that gives me a good excuse to go get a new pair or two. It's been so hot outside we haven't been able to take Sylvester out nearly as often as I'm sure he would like. He gets so hot, even in the shade, so I have a feeling he is going to be thrilled when we get back to the mountain and can go on our walks again.

Will and I have had our nose to the grind this week trying to knock off as many jobs as we can from our plates. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can carve out a couple hours this weekend so we can go see one of the many movies we've been wanting to check out! Ahh, there are so many: Spy, Jurassic World, Pitch Perfect 2 (I'm so bummed I still haven't seen it yet), and both Poltergeist and Insidious 3 (I'm such a sucker for scary movies!). At least the theaters out here aren't an hour+ away from us, haha. Are there any movies you guys are excited to see this weekend?

Yellow Front Door

Bright Yellow Front Door - littleladylittlecity
We have been busy over the last couple of weeks from finishing lots of jobs and starting new ones to trying to get our Scamp (aka Bessy) all fixed up. But, the thing I'm most excited about was painting our front door! I'm such a sucker for a bright and fun door, especially yellow ones. We even have a yellow door on the mountain. I think a bright door helps to make a house just so much more inviting. Every time I come home now I can't help but get so happy to see our newly painted door.

This week both Will and I are pretty slammed with work, so it was nice to have such an enjoyable weekend getting things done. What did you all do this weekend?

Forest Wall Mural - Bedroom Makeover

Forest Wall Mural - Bedroom Makeover - littleladylittlecity.com
Over the weekend we had some free time and decided to do something that we had been talking about for a while now: paint a mural on our bedroom wall! If you've been reading this blog for a little while you know that we love doing wall murals! They are just so wonderfully fun to do, and I think they look really amazing too.
Forest Wall Mural - Bedroom Makeover - littleladylittlecity.com
Forest Wall Mural - Bedroom Makeover - littleladylittlecity.com
Our bedroom was one of the least done rooms in the house, we just honestly don't spend much time in there. It was never a priority, but as the rest of the house got more and more complete the lack of things done in the bedroom felt out of balance. At first we wanted to do something like this one since it was so similar to what we see out at the mountain house, but after some consideration we settled on a rolling forest scene that is reminiscent of our mountain views in West Virginia as well. We already had green paint for the great green hall disaster of 2015, which made deciding easier haha.
Forest Wall Mural - Bedroom Makeover - littleladylittlecity.com
Forest Wall Mural - Bedroom Makeover - littleladylittlecity.com
We used the other colors we used throughout the house to mix the apple green color a bit lighter and a bit darker, so it goes well with the rest of our home. If you are ever looking for big containers to mix lots of paint in I highly recommend inexpensive 1/2 gallon mason jars, they work perfectly and can keep any left over paint pretty nicely too. Once our paints were mixed we broke out the projector and projected the forest landscape Will put together on our bedroom wall and started to paint away.
It's kind of crazy just how much more inviting our bedroom is with this mural. I love going to bed at night looking at it and waking up to it in the morning, it's a little piece of the mountain house in Arizona. I don't know, maybe we will paint a desert landscape in our bedroom on the mountain, hehe. What have you guys done to make a room more inviting?

Also this might be the best photo I've ever taken of Sylvester. He is acting like he is none too impressed with our new wall, haha, but I like to think he really loves it.

Miss Mayo Shop Giveaway!

Miss Mayo Shop Giveaway - littleladylittlecity.com
I'm super excited about this giveaway from Cristina for her Etsy shop Miss Mayo Shop because she has some of the most incredible jewelry featuring real flowers inside! Up for grabs is a $30 credit, but before we get to the giveaway here's Cristina to tell you a little bit more about herself and her shop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had just come to live with my mom in the tiny North Spain Mountain village, where I am currently living.

I was working and living in the South cost of Spain before, but when my father suddenly and unexpectedly passed away, I realized how short life is and wanted to be closer to my mother.
I kept the same Job (banking) for a few more months in a Nearby office as my work was kind enough to transfer me here, but never liked the boring statistical work.

To deal with the stress of my banking job, I would take long walks the mountains everyday with my loved dog Nemo, and I saw so many Beautiful tiny leaves and wild flowers all the time.
I wanted to keep a reminder of that feeling I would get seeing all the beauty of the nature on my walks.
Miss Mayo Shop Giveaway - littleladylittlecity.com
As a little girl, I looked up to my parents, they were my world. My mom had a Lovely Vintage pressed flower necklace and I always loved it. I would sneak and wear it to school some days!
I started looking for similar pressed flower jewelry on the internet and did not like what I saw.  None of them had the charm of the hand crafted jewelry my mother would wear. I decided to make my own real flower necklaces like my mothers.

I had to learn from scratch and there was lots of trial and error as I wanted to make it with glass  (not resin as most pressed flower artist) cause I like the vintage magnifying effect. A lot of them came out with bubbles and reflections and had to make my own mixtures and resins to put all the pieces together. Also I tried for a million different background materials.
Miss Mayo Shop Giveaway - littleladylittlecity.com
Making jewelry became a passion and a therapy for our loss, and I ended up making so many pieces I decided I should try to sell some of them at Etsy.... I Am no longer working at the bank, and now I am making a natural, honest, handmade business my way of living. You can see a little bit more in my about page on Etsy.
Miss Mayo Shop Giveaway - littleladylittlecity.com
I welcome your questions and custom orders as more and more brides want me to create custom jewelry with their wedding flowers. I now spend most of my days walking through the mountains in my nearby Spanish village, picking up bits and pieces of this beautiful area for my pressed flower jewelry pieces. My mother helps me run my Etsy shop and I am very thankful to be an artist who appreciates every precious minute this life has to give us.
