Back on the Mountain

We are finally back at our little mountain home for at least the next month or so, and boy does it feel nice. We really haven't been here since we left to start filming our documentary back in November. It's really funny how we have been gone for so long, but at the same time it feels like only yesterday that we left. The only thing that's different is there's a lot more dust (due to all the cement) on things, thank goodness for Swiffers
So Will and I have spent the last couple of days getting things organized once again, setting up computers, organizing all the external hard drives, trying to find all the usb cords for the previously mentioned hard drives, hehe. While we haven't done too much since being back we did have a very interesting guest show up at our front door.
A raccoon! I had to throw something away outside and I opened up the front door to find this little guy sleeping on our welcome mat. I have to say my reaction to finding him there was pretty ridiculous, I opened the door, saw him and made a "ooo" sound as if I had walked in on someone in the bathroom, haha! So I got Will and Shaye (who was hanging out with us for the weekend) up and showed them who had stopped by for a visit. Is it weird that until then I had never seen a raccoon in person?
After a little while of watching the little guy we had to shoo him off as we didn't think it would be a good idea having him make his home on our front door step, even though I would have loved that! I mean come one look at those eyes! My dad actually had pet raccoons when he was a kid and I have always been so jealous of that.

Have you guys ever had an unexpected guest at your door step?

Hope everyone is having a nice Monday!

  1. Not the doorstep, but one time we found a baby bat sleeping in my brother's toy firetruck in the third floor of our house. It must have come through an open window. We carried it outside and let it stay there till the bat woke up and flew away.

Another time we had squirrels in our attic (different house).

We've had some other animals, too...and more bats.

  2. We've had stray cats and dogs, mice, the occasional vole & a groundhog or two {one of the hazards of living rural-- groundhogs...} but nothing near as cute as that raccoon! He must have had some human contact in his past to allow you to photograph him!

    Welcome back to the mountains!

    1. I've never heard of a vole before. Is it kind of like a mole? I wonder if we have any of those guys up here.

  3. Hahaha that is so awesome! I would have started to research what food they eat and put it out with a little water dish, and my hubby would have gotten mad at me for doing so. And the dog would flip out of course. We've had mice in the garage and a bird take a nap on our front porch for a couple of nights, but that is it. That raccoon is so cute!

  4. Welcome home! Oh my goodness, he's SO CUTE. I wouldn't have had the heart to shoo him away. My parents living outside Nashville have had some pretty wild furry guests, but this is their best story: A storm blew the back door open, and a possum decided to move in! It took up residence in the pantry and sneakily ate dog food when no one was looking. My mother guesses it lived in her pantry for A WHOLE WEEK before she found it and figured out that the messes on the floor weren't coming from her new puppy. :-p

I swear my parents aren't scary rednecks, and Mom is a scrupulous housekeeper. :)

  5. My first ever experience with raccoons was sitting on my aunt's back porch, drinking wine, and hearing a cat squeal -- and my aunt says "Looks like some raccoons couldn't find a garbage can to scavenge!" Ever since then, I've just been terrified of them.

However, that... that face... in that picture... melts my heart and might be changing my opinion of them. Mostly because that face looks a lot like one my cat makes, I think. This is an uncomfortable feeling, thinking a raccoon is cute.

You are helping me grow as a person. :x

    1. Happy to help Kayla, hehe! And if my aunt had told me that story I probably would have been terrified of them too!

I seriously don't think I have ever seen a cuter animal! That face and those eyes. I had to use every inch of my willpower to not pick him up and give him a hug haha! When it comes to animals I am perpetually 4 years old haha!

  6. Welcome home!

I love your little raccoon guest. He is so super cute. I had a friend who had one as a pet growing up, but I was really scared of it at the time. Mostly because she captured him from a trash heap down by the beach.

    1. Wow that is a brave friend, I don't think I could ever capture a wild animal and then keep it as a pet. Good for them I bet he had a much nicer life than eating out of a trash heap.

  11. My parents have a family of racoons that visit them every night around 8 PM. They leave old treats out for them. They're pretty nice and don't get mean at all.

  15. I love Racoons, I think they have really lovely faces. I'd adopt him! Maybe I am not a good example, 4 stray kittens came to my door and now they are my adopted babies. Mean babies, but still.

  16. Oh that raccoon is so cute! The one time I saw a raccoon was when I was throwing trash out in the complex dumpster and I heard a rustling and out popped a raccoon. Naturally I screamed and ran away while he ran away and snuck into the sewer. Yours is so much cuter and less scary haha.

  19. Awww, that raccoon is adorable :) I love them even though they're usually pretty mean :/ I once had a run-in with a rabid raccoon-- he was standing on two legs, blocking my from getting into my house after getting off the school bus. I had to run, it was so scary!

  31. He's so cute! I grew up in a mountain town and we had a lot of skunks hang out by our back door. We also got a raccoon once! My mom's shoes were sitting by the door, which was open for fresh air. A raccoon waltzed right up and snagged one! Shocking! She never got it back either, he he.

  32. How adorable! It's so cute! Unfortunatly we don't have raccoons here in Australia, we have possoms but they are not nearly as cute as that little creature! How I wish I could find one on my doorstep too!

  37. So cute! We have raccoons and opossums always hanging around my house, apparently porcupines too-although I have never seen those but my family has had several dogs over the years that have ended up with quills in their faces.
